I saw "The Descent" last night and I must say that it is the first horror movie since "Saw" that I left the theater trying to catch my breath.
I tend to like my scary movies with more human bad guys than monster bad guys. That is why Saw and Scream and Halloween are some of my favorites. (Let's not go into details about Michael Myers...He was a human before Halloween 4).
That being said I was a bit unsure about seeing The Descent. I knew that some chicks were going to go down in a cave and get trapped and be stalked by some kind of monster. I was expecting something kind of like the movie Pitch Black crossed with Jeepers Creepers. What I found was a pretty smart, mostly terrifying, gore-filled adventure. The Pitch Black theory was spot on. It had a lot of similarities, especially scenes in the dark. (What else, huh)
What was missing were the bad horror flick cliches. I half way expected to see a lesbian couple spending half the movie getting freaky and the other half getting sliced up. Didn't happen. I expected to hear bad dialogue and plenty of cheesy one liners that come with every horror movie. Didn't happen.
The movie is good where it counts. A couple of times the director reverted to cheap thrills and pop-up behind the actress scares, but for the most part he let his camera and the scenario do the talking and stalking for him.
GRADE: B +
On another note; I saw my first preview for Saw 3. It looks pretty good. I think they have taken it to a larger scale yet again. First it was a single room with two guys. Then a single house with several people. And now the stage is even bigger. I won't ruin it for you.
I also saw a trailer for "The Quiet" with Elisha Cuthbert. It looks pretty good. Kind of like a Swim Fan meets The Perfect Murder.
One movie I will not be seeing is the new Ben Stiller as a museum security guard Jimanji meets Bill and Ted flick coming out this Christmas.
My five most anticipated movies right now:
1. The Departed (Jack, Leo, Matt, and Mark...Directed by Martin)
2. The Black dahlia (Oscar written all over it. I love a true crime mystery)
3. Snakes on a Plane (Have you check out my Myspace Song?)
4. Spider-Man 3 (Too far away to be number one...it will be soon, I promise)
5. Little Miss Sunshine (Hearing too many good things for this one to be bad!)
